7 statements of the character of God

Throughout the Bible, Jesus makes claims that separate him from the rest of humanity. One book has seven statements of Jesus claiming to be God known as the seven “I am statements”

1. I am the bread of life. John 6:35 “Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” ESV. We see here Jesus talking to a group of people who just witnessed a mircle of Jesus taking a little boy’s lunch and multiplying to feed five thousand men with twelve baskets left over. People seeking for food to survive temporarly on earth ate of that bread but were also given eternal bread that they would live with him forevor in heaven.

2. I am the light of the world. John 8:12 “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” ESV. Before we see the Pharisees, Moments brought a woman who had been caught in adultery to Jesus because previously Jesus had done acts that had made the Pharisees grumble. Hence, their goal was to trap Jesus, but He said, ” Anyone without sin cast the first stone” The Bible said they dropped their stones and went away. The woman was caught in a sin, but instead of saying go ahead and stone her, Jesus says, “Go and sin no more.” We, as sinful beings, love to sin. Jesus calls those living in sin; they are “living in darkness” Jesus died so that we can live in the light because Jesus is the light of the world.

3. I am the door. John 10:9 “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” ESV. The Bible says that whoever enters will go on the straight and narrow path. Entering heaven is simple but not easy. You must believe in Jesus, who is the door.

4. I am the good shepherd. John 10:14 ” ESV. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.” Jesus compares humanity to sheep. Those who know anything about sheep know that sheep are not smart and tend to wander off; we do the same. Jesus commands us to be holy, but we often go off on a path of destruction and sin, but God is ready to bring us back to him and the rest of the flock if we are ready to live Godly. God is like a father running toward us, leaving the rest of the flock to restore the relationship with the father and us.

5. I am the resurrection and the life. John 10 we see Jesus raising Lazurus from the dead. Jesus says in John 10:25 “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” Jesus promises those who believe in him life after death.

6. I am the way John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

7. I am the true vine. John 15:5 ” I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” Here is another analogy: The branch holds the plant up and what helps fruit or whatever the plant is growing. Without the vine, there would not be any fruit. The same thing goes for us; we can’t do anything apart from the one who gives us life.

Summary These seven “I am statements I hope gives you a new perspective on the character of God and how essential Jesus is in our everyday life and how much he loves us and wants to have a relationship with us. We have committed a sin that separates us from God, but He desperately wants to restore that relationship so that we will live with our creator forever!
